Seng the Internal Clock
It is necessary to set the internal clock to properly me stamp the data collecon on your device. We

Interfacing with an External Device
The USB jack on the le side of the Inspector EXP provides an interface for use with the USB Observer Soware
Figure 2(10). You can use it to record the counts on a computer, download the recorded data, and calibrate the
instrument. For details, see Chapter 7 Observer Soware.
The following secons give instrucons for several commonly-used procedures. With any procedure, the user
must determine the suitability of the instrument or procedure for that applicaon.
Establishing the Background Count
Normal background radiaon levels vary at dierent locaons, dierent mes, even in dierent areas of the
same room. To accurately interpret the readings you get on the Inspector EXP, it is good to establish the normal
background radiaon count rate for each area you plan to monitor. You can do this by taking a med count. For
more informaon on using the mer, see Taking a Timed Count in Chapter 3.
A 10-minute average is moderately accurate. You can repeat it several mes and compare the results to
establish accuracy. To establish a more accurate average, take a 1 hour med count. If you need to determine
whether there is prior contaminaon, take averages in several locaons, and compare the averages.
Environmental Area Monitoring
You can keep the Inspector EXP in CPM or mR/hr mode whenever you want to monitor the ambient radiaon,
and look at it from me to me to check for elevated readings.
If you suspect an increase in ambient radiaon, use the mer and take a 5 or 10 minute count, and compare
the average to your average background count. If you suspect an increase that is too small to detect with a
short med reading, you can take a longer count (for example 6, 12, or 24 hours).
